KISS for a Credit Score Boost

My 8th grade math teacher would always have the letters KISS written on his board before exam time. To you it reads “kiss”, to his class it read “Keep It Simple Stupid”. It was his way of telling us to never overthink our math problems.  Today we all are faced with problems that we could K.I.S.S.

As a realtor, I am often asked about credit problems. More often than not I am quizzed on the best way to repair credit or the best resources to use for credit repair. Full disclaimer, I am not a credit repair expert nor have I ever been but I have experienced financial downfalls in my life. I have compiled a few tips that helped me get my credit back on track, hopefully you will find that all you have to do is K.I.S.S.

  • First, know and understand exactly what is on your credit report (KISS). There are various websites that provide free credit reports. Most banks offer their customers credit protection which includes monthly credit reports. Review your report for old debt that has been paid off, items that are not yours, fraudulent items, late history, and collections.
  • If there are incorrect or old items on your credit report you can dispute these items with the three credit bureaus. Create an online account for each credit bureau: Equifax, Experian, and Transunion and file a dispute for each incorrect or old item.
  • If you have items that are in collections status, contact the debt collection agency. All contact numbers for each debt should appear on the credit report. Request a full payoff statement from the collection agency or negotiate a lower settlement amount. Note: negotiating lower settlement amounts will show on your credit report as “settled for a lesser amount” or something to that nature.
  • Anything not in delinquent or collection status are your current bills. Pay these bills on time (KISS). Pay a little more than you are required to pay monthly to lower the debt faster. Include these bills in your monthly budget and never miss a payment (KISS).

To simplify further, you are reviewing your credit report for items that you do not want on there any longer and disputing those items or paying those items off. The remaining items are your current bills, pay those bills faithfully. After taking these actions it can take 1-3 months to see a significant increase in your credit score.
